The Bomber Walkie Talkie is a super heavy duty rendition of the world famous Heddon Zara Spook. The Walkie Talkie comes in two different rattling types - High Pitch and Low Pitch. Both High and Low Pitch versions create a raucous rattling sound to attract fish. The High Pitch is a little more of a chattering rattle whereas the Low Pitch tends to be more of a knocking sound. There actually isn't that much difference between the two sounds, and both can be used with similar results without worrying too much whether you have the High or Low Pitch. The Bomber A-Salt Popper is a super heavy duty rendition of the Cordell Pencil Popper.

“I made the Cordell Pencil Popper for saltwater surf fishing on the beaches of the Northeast Atlantic coast,” says lure designer Cotton Cordell. “My sales reps in that area were telling me we needed to add that type of lure to the product line for their area. So I went there to surf fish for a while to get a firsthand feel for what surf anglers needed,” says Cotton who lives in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

“The pencil popper was not an original idea. There were some great lure designers on the striper coast. One legendary name I recall was Stan Gibbs, but there were others too. My sales reps may have sent me some pencil poppers to look at, but after fishing the surf for a while, I pretty much defined my own notion of what was important for me to build into a pencil popper.”

“The most important thing, in addition to the action, was to get the weight in its tail, to get the maximum distance. I can remember standing in the surf and seeing all these four wheel drive trucks pull up right at dusk and dozens of guys getting into the water shoulder to shoulder with twelve foot rods. It really amounted to a distance casting competition. Whoever could cast the furthest had the best chance, and that’s the reason for the Pencil Popper. You can really empty your spool with it, more than any other topwater. With the tail weighted right, it throws like a dart, never even wiggles once while in the air.”

"The other design aspect I achieved with the Pencil Popper was its action. If you knew how to work a long, limber surf rod, you could just make it sit there and slap its head on the surface for a long, long time without reeling it in an inch. To make a pencil popper do this was strenuous. I don’t know how bass pros are using it now or if they are achieving that in-place action with it today. It really was an art mastered by the surf guys.”

This sturdy shallow swimmer has been a staple in striped bass angler's tackle bags since the early 1980's - but this is not your father's Long A. It' s now made of incredibly strong polycarbonate plastic with heavy duty hook hangers, strong split rings and premium heavy duty VMC 9626PS 4X-strong hooks.

The 17A is big enough for high surf fishing, capable of casting in breezy conditions and best used with heavy tackle. As with most plastic lipped minnows, it is better to cast with spinning tackle.

I can recall several fall ruins on Cape Cod's deep outer beaches when only two things seemed to work with trophy striped bass - live eels and Wind-Cheaters. Few if any other plugs seemed to be successful during those fall runs - a great tribute to the fish-catchuing ability of the Wind-Cheater.

Deep beaches, inlets, jetties, breachways. rough water, strong currents or rip tides are the domain of the Wind-Cheater, and as it's name implies, it is a long distance casting champ.

The Wind-Cheater is kind of like a hybrid or cross of plastic lip minnows and metal lip wood plugs - and therein lies the unique niche of this very sturdy, dependable fish-catcher.
