Recently went out to one of my favorite jetties and had a ball catching mackerel all afternoon. To be honest, the mack bite wasn't as wild as it sometimes is, but it was still fun. I and my friend managed to land close to 20 mackerel in a few hours. We kept the largest 4; they are quite tasty if prepared correctly. It was really fun to watch the pelicans crash into the surf, as they divebombed schools of macks and other fish.

SEBILE Full-Wired Splasher 120 & Splasher 152 ~ Topwater Lures for Striped Bass Fishing
SEBILE Full-Wired Splasher 120 & Splasher 152 ~ Topwater Lures for Striped Bass Fishing
The Splasher combines the actions of three conventional topwater types - poppers, chuggers and walkers in one. The Splasher has a huge, deep bowl of a mouth, a blaring trumpet-shaped head, a water-slicing "Power Keel" and a flattened belly in order to skate and pivot more easily on the surface. Although the head is large, the tail is thin and flat - the best shape for a fish to engulf it and get hooked securely.
A Splasher can be cast a tremendous distance and can throw a huge splash for its size. When one sits in the water, the head is raised so only 30% of it's mouth is in water. The other 70% of the flared cup is above the surface where it can eject huge mouthfuls of water. It has the possibility to make a giant, drenching splash if you want to let distant or deep fish know, "Hey, look at me. I am over here! Now come get me!"
Using gentler rod actions, the Splasher can mimic a creature that's leisurely swimming and feeding on the surface, producing a more subtle splashing, spitting or bubbling noise that arouses predatorial interest.
Work the Splasher a little more aggressively, and it can imitate the struggling, twisting, turning, distressed movements of a vulnerable critter flailing furiously on the surface. It's not the smooth, predictable, mechanical action like most other lures have. Due to the unique compound curves of the Splasher's body, it mimics the panicked, struggling throes of a creature in serious trouble.
If you want to create a zig-zaggy walk the dog action, that's easy to do with the Splasher too. The proprietary "Power Keel" is the secret why the Splasher will walk the dog perfectly when you use a constant cadence of short, sharp rod twitches with a slow retrieve.
The Splasher 120 and 152 are "Full Wire" reinforced. One single piece of heavy stainless wire runs from the front eye to the tail eye along the belly, forming the belly hook hanger too.
The Splasher 120 weighs 1-1/2 oz and is the perfect size for open ocean beaches and small to medium size striped bass with medium strength gear.
The 2-3/4 oz Splasher 152 is better suited for big water and bigger striped bass using heavy gear.
Model | Size | Weight | Type | Level | Line Test |

Rebel Jumpin' Minnow ~ Topwater Lure for Striped Bass Fishing
Rebel Jumpin' Minnow ~ Topwater Lure for Striped Bass Fishing
Name | Model | Size | Weight | Depth | Hooks | Type |
Rebel Jumpin' Minnow | T20 | 4-1/2" (114mm) | 1/2 oz (23g) | Topwater | #2 | Walk-the-dog action. Loud knocking noise. |
The 4-1/2" Jumpin' Minnow has a sturdy polycarbonate body and saltwater grade hook hangers. It is a popular topwater lure for freshwater and saltwater striped bass.
At 1/2 oz, it is a medium to light tackle lure for schoolie stripers and relatively calm water surfaces.
Even for schoolie stripers, you may desireto upgrade to stronger #2 trebles when replacing the original hooks. Where big fish are likely to be caught, you can upgrade to stronger split rings and x-strong size #1 hooks.
To achieve the walk-the-dog action, simply cast out and begin a slack line twitching or popping of the rod tip. Begin slowly and concentrate on the rhythmic left-right, side-stepping action of the lure. Once you have the right side-to-side rhythm, you can then experiment with a range of slow to fast forward movement (speed at which you take in line by turning the handle). Try varying those two independent factors - side-to-side versus forward movement - until you come across the combination that fish want to strike.

Cordell Red Fin ~ Plastic Lipped Minnow for Striped Bass Fishing
Cordell Red Fin ~ Plastic Lipped Minnow for Striped Bass Fishing
Name | Model | Size | Weight | Depth | Hooks | Type |
Cordell Red Fin | C09 | 5" (127mm) | 5/8 oz (18g) | 0-3 ft | #2 | Surface & subsurface swimmer. |
Cordell Red Fin | C10 | 7" (177mm) | 1 oz (28g) | 0-2 ft | 3/0 | Surface & subsurface swimmer. |
The 5" Red Fin is best used with relatively light spinning gear when the water is flat and wind calm. The 5' Red Fin is also legendary for fishing in the back bays and estuaries.
The 7" Red Fin is mostly used on open ocean beaches with medium/heavy spinning gear. The 7" Red Fin is best used for calm to moderate conditions.
Legendary lure designer Cotton Cordell recalls how he originally made the first Red Fin with freshwater bass in mind.
“I made the first Red Fin back when the government was busy impounding many new lakes. Ouachita and Sam Rayburn were two brand new lakes where I perfected the Red Fin, wiggling it through freshly-flooded treetops on these and other newly-made waters at that time. It proved deadly for largemouth," recalls Cotton.
"It wasn’t an original idea. The Rapala Floating Minnow had recently come into the country. That was about fifty years ago and it was revolutionary. They [Rapalas] were selling for $5 apiece, and everything else, other lures sold for $1.25. I didn’t have the money to buy Rapalas, so I built the Red Fin.”
“The Red Fin became an immediate success almost fifty years ago,” says Cotton. “People who were the first to use Red Fins on different lakes, what happened for a time was if you used a Red Fin, you caught fish. If you didn’t have a Red Fin, you caught nothing. Why it was better than the rest [other minnows] is because I was the first to make the lip and body in one piece. By integrating the lip and body of the Red Fin, the lip couldn’t loosen, it was never crooked, and the Red Fin’s nose was light in weight, enhancing the swimming action. Other lipped minnows, the lip was glued in (not always straight). To keep the lip from breaking loose, the heads of other minnows had to be bulked up with plastic and reinforced, making their noses so heavy they don’t sit level on top, and the nose pulled them under too much. That was a problem with other minnows fifty years ago, and still to this day."
"I made Red Fins just for largemouth, but Red Fins have proven to be far more popular in saltwater today, and they are probably the one bait that every freshwater striper angler has in their box for the spring night bite."
The integrated lip and resultant lightweight nose is a key to the Red Fin's early and ongoing success.
A black Red Fin, even if you have to paint it yourself, is one color that many striper anglers use for night fishing in fresh and saltwater.
Make a Super Vee Waker
Here’s one more trick. The lip of a 5" Red Fin can be carefully and slowly warmed so you can bend it downward more. The modified Red Fin spends most all its time on top of the water, leaving a vee wake on the surface. It does a deadly surface dance for bass.
Red Fin on bottom has been made into a Super Vee Waker.
Add a Teaser
And another trick. If it is legal on the waters where you fish, tie a dropper loop in the line no more than fifteen inches ahead of a plastic lip minnow like a Red Fin, and tie 2-3 inches of line with a small single hook on it in order to Texas rig a tiny, weightless soft bait. A bit awkward to cast and tangly, but well worth it. Many days (or nights) you will catch more fish on the flimsy teaser than on the plastic lip minnow. Who knows why, just enjoy!
A small 3" Senko (9B-series) tied as a teaser ahead of a Red Fin.
