Mustad Triple Grip Treble Hooks ~ 36233BLN Black Nickel and 233BLN Feather Trebles

Mustad Triple Grip Treble Hooks ~ 36233BLN Black Nickel and 233BLN Feather Trebles

Note: Models 36233BLN and 233BLN are the same hook except 233BLN has feathers tied on it and 36233BLN does not.

There are three excellent series of Mustad Ultra Point treble hooks to meet all your bass fishing needs ranging from:

  1. The short shank, extra strong KVD Elite Treble TG76BLN is the best choice for powerfishing, for bottom contact or cover contact.
  2. The long shank Triple Grip 36233BLN and 233BLN feathered version are often best for topwaters and medium strength tackle.
  3. The round bend 36102BLN and 102R feathered version are suited for light tackle and lighter lures.

In terms of finish, the TG76BLN, 36233BLN Triple Grip, 233BLN feathered version and 36102BLN all have the same black nickel coating, which is the hardest, sharpest, strongest, most abrasion-resistant finish.

In terms of the point. all the above hook models have the same UltraPoint MicrosSharp 4.3, which means they all have the sharper, stronger, longer-lasting points.

However, because of Kevin VanDam's success by powerfishing deep crankbaits to dominate top tournaments the past few years, the Mustad KVD Elite Treble TG76BLN has gotten all the attention of late. It's true you would definitely want to use the KVD Elite Treble when constantly contacting bottom or cover with a lure, like a deep-diving crankbait for example, and anytime when you're powerfishing hardbaits with heavier tackle, the KVD Elite Treble is strongest and best.

But despite all the overwhelming marketing effort aimed at the extra strong KVD Elite Treble these days, it is not the only treble hook you'll ever need for bass fishing!

Bassdozer says, "When you are fishing open water, with topwater lures, jerkbaits or with lures that fish slash at instead of engulf, then model 36233BLN Ultra Point Black Nickel Triple Grip trebles (and the feathered versions of the same hook) can be the best choice."

For instance, bass often tend to slash at jerkbaits or topwaters whereas they often tend to engulf crankbaits. The longer shank of the 36233BLN Triple Grip put the points out further from the lure, in a little better position to snare fish that are just sniffing at your bait.

The KVD Elite is the strongest one for powerfishing. The 36233BLN Triple Grip and 233BLN feathered version are also strong yet they excel for hardbaits used on 8 to 12 lb test. The 36233BLN and 233BLN however, aren't really for powerfishing, but most bass fishing isn't powerfishing anyway, which means... shouldn't you be using the 36233BLN Triple Grip and 233BLN feathered version for medium strength applications, and taking advantage of the longer shank for lure types that fish just slash at, such as topwaters and jerkbaits? The answer is yes!

I'd be remiss not to mention the Mustad 36102BLN treble and the 102R feathered version of that hook The 36102BLN and 102R feathered version are the best treble choice for light tackle or lightweight, delicately-balanced lures, for example, fragile balsa baits with screw eyes on lighter tackle. The 36102BLN and 102R feathered version excel for small, light poppers too. They're great for smaller than usual jerkbaits, crankbaits and topwaters such as would be used on light tackle or for small stream or pond fishing for smaller size bass.

Kevin VanDam says: "To sum up treble selection, it's making sure you have a strong enough hook in any situation for the cover being fished and the line size. With the different Mustad trebles I use, I have all the bases covered."

Kevin VanDam says: "Mustad feathered trebles are the best on the market. A few years ago when we identified the need to have feathered trebles in the Mustad product line, I said to them, 'Hey, this is what we have to have,' and Jeff Pierce at Mustad listened. He's a serious flytyer. He knew just the right grade of chicken feathers, the way they needed to be laid on the hook and tied down. They're crafted with extra long feathers, so supple, and they're laid on the hook just perfect! No other feather treble comes close! I mainly use white feathers, however the chartreuse/white feathers are just wicked for smallmouth. Before Mustad offered the chartreuse/white feathers, I would use chartreuse-colored dye to spray part (or occasionally all) of the white feathers with chartreuse dye, but now that feathered trebles come tied in chartreuse/white, I don't have to spray them myself."

Mustad KVD Elite Treble Hook Model TG76BLN

Mustad KVD Elite Treble Hook Model TG76BLN

The hook that KVD has been clobbering everyone who's anyone in the bass fishing world for the past several seasons.

KVD Elite Triple Grip Treble #TG76BLN

”There simply is no other treble hook you would ever need for bass fishing” - Kevin VanDam

It's Mustad hook model #TG76BLN, also know as the Mustad KVD Elite Treble.

I first heard it was on the drawing board (or the need was perceived for it by KVD) at the beginning of 2008, and it finally reached the market in early 2010.

Why do I pick this hook as one of the best treble hooks for bass anglers? Because it is the exact quality, strength, shank, point, sharpness, durability and everything else that KVD has ever wanted in a treble hook. That's significant.

As anyone who follows KVD knows, he has practically specialized in crankbaits the past couple of seasons, and during that time, KVD has been figuring out, defining and now Mustad has produced the best possible crankbait hook that KVD requires to dominate the world's top tournaments using these trebles on his crankbaits.

Bassdozer says: "Despite all the many fine trebles already on the market, this is an important and necessary new hook model."

The wire gauge is thicker, 1X stronger (just the way KVD likes it).

KVD Elite Treble #TG76BLN (bottom row) is 2X shorter and 1X stronger than comparable size Mustad Triple Grip Wide Gap Treble #36233BLN (top row)

It has a hard black nickel finish that resists point-dulling and corrosion. I had spoken to KVD about that, and one of the ways he's been using his deep-running crankbaits is to grind them into the hard bottom spots on ledges, channel bars and humps for example. These are hard bottom areas that often contain compacted shells, rocks, gravel. So you can imagine how fast hooks may dull by grinding crankbaits onto these spots. The new KVD Elite Treble is designed to stand up to that abuse as best any hook can, according to KVD.

Not only does the black nickel finish resist dulling, making the hook point stay sharper longer. KVD told me that the black nickel finish on these hooks adds about 20% more strength to the hook, just from the hard finish alone.

It is based on a Triple Grip design that's morphed to be 2X shorter. So you can not only replace old trebles but upsize (another thing KVD likes doing). Since the shanks are 2X shorter, the next size up of KVD Elite Treble is not lengthier than the original hooks and won't marry (tangle each other) any more than the originals, if at all.

Of course the KVD Elite Treble sports an UltraPoint on the business end, with the new 4.3 Micro Sharp Point Technology that's not only the sharpest possible but at the same time strongest possible point ever produced by Mustad.
