deps Korrigan SR ~ Shallow-Running Bottom Contact Crankbait

ModelSizeWeightTypeDepth
Korrigan SR2" / 35 mm 3/8 ozFloating/Diving. Shallow runner. Silent.3-5'

The Korrigan SR is a shallow running bottom contact crank that features a unique flat lip design, wide square back, fixed weight and is ideal for throwing in shallow areas around rip rap, hard bottoms, lay downs and stumps.

Square bills and shallow-running contact crankbaits have been one of the hottest categories of lures on the top pro tours starting with the Bassmaster Classic in February 2011 when the top three places - KVD, Martens and Remitz - used squarebill cranks to ground and pound through grass and stumps on the Louisiana Delta. Since then, 2011 has been the "year of the squarebill" when it comes to crankbaits.

Yet many anglers use squarebills one way only, and that's to use a shallow-diving version (the ima Square Bill is awesome here) to crash shallow shoreline cover like stumps and to rap against hard, rocky bottoms such as found along riprap banks, which is most effective in the dim conditions of early morning and dirty water. As the day brightens, the early morning squarebill action dies off, and many anglers don't make the move - or have the correct lure in their arsenal to let them continue to use this same ground-pounding approach, only a few feet deeper and further off the bank during late morning and mid-day.

The deps Korrigan SR is such a tool that's most anglers are missing. The Korrigan SR runs a little deeper (3 to 5 feet) making it ideal for knocking the bottom loose later in the day when bass characteristically pull further back (but not too far off) from the very shoreline. These fish are often undetected and aren't caught by anglers who don't make this mid-morning adjustment to their contact cranking patterns.

Automatic Kickback Action

It is cleverly designed to trigger its own strikes. How does it do this? When the water that catches from it's uniquely designed flat lip releases, a kickback in the bait happens. This "automatic warped action" mimics a baitfish trying to escape its prey.

Snagless Bottom Knocking

The flat-angled lip allows the bait to crash hard against shallow structure while it avoids getting hung up. Typically, this type of flat-angled lip is found on deeper range cranbaits but designers of the Korrigan were able to make it work so the bait hunkers down and produces that bottom knock known to trigger strikes.

Deps Buster K ~ Hollow Topwater Frog

Body Length: 2.4" (61mm) not counting tail
Weight: 1/2 oz

One of Japan’s hottest sellers, the Buster K is a unique topwater hollow popper frog. It features a rattling weight inside, rabbit hair legs, and a big, fat, loud mouth that bass just want to bust!

Items in photo not included with item for sale.

The mouth is quite cupped for two clever purposes. First, to make a sharp and powerful pop sound. Second, water pressure (or lily pads, branches,  etc.) pushing back against the cupped mouth minimizes the distance the Buster K moves forward. Most other frogs leave the area where bass are hiding under cover way too quickly – and without making the bass mad enough to take a good crack at them. In other words, lazy bass let them get away. However, the Buster K hangs around and bothers a bass to no end…until it takes aggressive action to lash out to silence this vexing, blabber-mouthed pest.

There’s a free-ranging metal weight inside that moves to the rear to enhance casting distance and accuracy, then it hits against internal parts and rolls around inside to add sound and a little imbalance to the action.

The hooks have the barb on the outside of the point – so the barb is facing up – and the inside or downward side of the point is smooth against the frog’s skin, thereby minimizing the damage to the body by the barb.

Which Deps Frog to Use When?

Deps offers 3 great hollow frogs now - the Basirisky Hardbelly (center), Slither K (left) and Buster K (right). Not included with item for sale.

Deps founder and lure designer, Okumura explained some of the differences between them, when best to use each one - especially how to combine their use for most effectiveness. He says, "Of course it all depends on the conditions in the field...I really can't give you the exact science when the fish are going to want the Slither K where it's gliding along, versus the Buster K where the sound of the pop is calling them." When Okumura ffrog fishes, he brings all three and he lets the fish tell him what's better, adding, "It's not like you can observe the conditions in the field and see that it's just so that you can predict which one will get bit. It's tough to say when to use what - or what's better. If it is windy, however, when the wind blows, the Buster K is definitely the number one lure. If it's windy, the Slither K won't work. The wind will overpower the action of the bait. In open water, the easiest to use would be the Basirisky, and in the very thick grass, the Slither K is the easiest to walk through thick grass."

deps Slither K ~ Topwater Hollow Frog

Body Length: 2.4" (61mm) not counting tail
Weight: 3/8 oz

Two frogs that are dramatically different from and a cut above all the rest are the Basirisky and the Slither K. Made by deps in Japan, they are imported to the USA by Optimum Baits. Optimum has imported the deps Basirisky frog since 2005. Nevertheless, there are still many US anglers today, even top tour pros who frog a lot, that haven't heard of the Basirisky yet. Many others who have tried one in thick mats didn't like the Basirisky since the legs jam against thick weeds, making for tough going. Yet if you use the Basirisky in open water, along weed edges, in sparse cover or at night, you'll never frog again without one. The legs give the Basirisky a wobbling, plopping action like a Jitterbug! There's no other frog quite like it and especially where there's a thin, floating surface layer of pond scum, moss or sawdust, the paddling, waddling Basirisky rules.

What I appreciate most about the Basirisky is that its design is so fresh and new and different, even though it has been on the market since 2005. What's new for 2012 is that Optimum's importing the deps Slither K, and it too is a unique hollow body topwater frog. It slithers across the surface in a rolling, flashing manner with its tantalizing tail of rabbit fur. This is no ordinary frog. In terms of action, it's energetic due to the concave sides that scoop water side-to-side in a frantically swerving disturbance on top.

The concave or cupped sides of the Slither K are what makes it swerve, roll, flash its sides - and walk-the-dog with ease.

A rabbit fur strip adds natural action and allure.

Two holes in the body near the tail allow water to be added or expelled with a squeeze.

Deps Pulsecod ~ Spontaneous Spring-Weighted Micro-Vibration Topwater

Length: 3-1/8" (80mm)
Weight: 1/2 oz (16g)
Type: Topwater, Popper
Note: It is a little larger than most other typical bass poppers with larger hooks than usual.

The Pulsecod was developed to show highly-pressured bass something new in terms of topwater lures.

Cut-away shows the Pulsecod's unique spring-weighted micro vibration generation mechanism.

It has a huge cupped mouth that bulges out to the sides in order to create a loud, boiling disturbance like a predator just tried to smack it off the surface – and then the neat part comes into play next.

As the Pulsecod sits there recovering from the fake, near-fatal attack it staged on itself, a spring-mounted metal ball inside the body knocks against the walls, causing spontaneous popping and pecking sounds and unbalancing the bait, keeping it from sitting perfectly still.

As the spring-ball expends its energy further and vibrates toward an eventual standstill, fine waves of quivering micro-vibration emanate from inside the body, getting weaker and weaker until…BLOOEY! Even the most persnickety bass in highly-pressured waters break down and go totally bonkers to hit this trembling, near-dying imposter.

The Pulsecod has an unprecedented natural appeal and possesses a powerful simulation of life. It even surprises tough-to-catch bass that think they’ve seen it all.
