Heaving Heavy Jigs for Late Fall Bass Fishing

Heaving Heavy Jigs for Late Fall Bass Fishing

After several months of not being able to do fishing (or much else) while recovering from a broken arm, I'm glad to be back on the water again with fishing ally Bill Bjork.

Best of all, it seems like the the late fall bass run is in full swing right now.

The fish shown succumbed to 1/2 to 1 oz weedless jigs flipped into shallow brush in Wahweap Bay on Lake Powell, Utah using heavy line today (16th November). We had a smattering of smaller ones too. It seems the deepest or primary brushline is most commonly found at 24 feet deep, and I've had up to 30 relatively smaller bass (up to 2 pounds apiece) per trip lately where that outer deeper brush line intersects with vertical underwater ledges or rocky humps having shallow brush atop the ledges or humps, such as in the back of Friendship Cove.

In many areas, it is common to find a pronounced secondary brush line running from 12 to 15 feet deep, and this brush line has live "garlic grass" in it. This is a bottom-creeping vegetation, that if crushed between your fingers, exudes the odor of fresh garlic, and it remains alive, hosting many small organism that liv ein the garlic grass through the winter, forming the base of a food chain there. Wherever that secondary brush line with the garlic grass intersects with vertical walls, especially where rocks have slid off the walls into 12 to 15 feet of water, the relatively bigger bass (like in these photos) are balling up at those intersections.

A happy Russ Bassdozer is back at it after recovering from a busted arm.

Jigs like these are the ticket right now. Photo shows 1/2 oz Alabama Jig (upper left), 1/2 oz Style T Jig (right), 1 oz Punch Jig (lower left). The 1 oz jig in shallow water has a presence and an impact when it hits the bottom that lighter jigs don't have. It's hard work but rewarding to punch these big jigs through brush all day, and when the wind gusts, the one-ouncers are mandatory to feel bottom and detect bites.

Riverside Bass Fishing

Updates? Here's one. Life has been oh so busy but I'm still fishing. Fairmount Park, Seccombe, Ford, Perris, even a trip to Diamond Valley Lake. I have piles of photos on my computer from the trips, but haven't uploaded them. It used to be that I was thrilled to fish, get home and show the trophy pictures to my friends
I was hunting crappie at Fairmount Park in Riverside, Dirty IE, California, scratched one crappie off the roots, then moved to the "other" pond at the park. Was fishing with one of my buds, he was throwing bass gear and I was working the panfish gear (light tackle, 4lb mono, collapsible spinning rod/reel). I'm always amazed at how crazy Fairmount is. As we were fishing, the police pulled over a car 5ft from our spot, then proceeded to arrest the driver and haul off the car. As this was going down,I felt the faintest tap, then another. Set the hook, and boom, I'm into something that's definitely not a crappie. Tries to take me into the lily pads (good luck on 4lb test, right?), but he eventually plays nice and comes to the shore. Quick photo-op, place him back in the water, grab the pliers to unhook him, and he takes off-snap! At least I got the pic. Not a terribly huge bass, but a nice for for the 'mount.
Fairmount has really been better for me these last few months. Previously, it was almost a guaranteed skunk here. Glad to shake that season off.

Megabass FX9 ~ Moving Lip Jerkbait

Megabass FX9 ~ Moving Lip Jerkbait

Type: Shallow. Rising. Rolling. Silent.
Length 90mm
Weight 3/8oz

The FX-9 is a jerkbait with a moving lip which streamlines casting, increases action when retrieved and enhances irregular darting actions. The action of FX9 is largely dependant upon this moving lip. When casting, the lip settles horizontal to the body to minimize air resistance and maximize flight distance. But the advantages of the moving lip do not end there. When performing in the water, the lip moves depending on the water reisistance against it. That is, during jerking actions, the lip quickly flips back and forth, and creates darting action which anglers ahvenever seen in a lure before. With some twitches, FX9 swings its head to the left and right. With a fast retrieve, it creates a 180 degree roll to each side without losing its balance. When FX( rolls, it swims leaving a trail like the letter "S". When the retrieve is stopped, FX9 rises with its head up.

The internal weighting system is fixed and therefore silent.

Note that the FX9 Strobe version has the addition of an internal flashing plate.

Slightly smaller than the Vision 95 (top), the FX9 (bottom) can perform more erratic actions and casts longer distance.

FX9 with lip horizontal to body for casting distance (top) and lip fully extended (bottom).

Equipped with Katsuage Treble Hooks. Megabass original Katsuage hooks have an out-barb, out-point and are wide gap with a 'near-center' seat for the hook to stay pinned. These trebles are specifically designed for jerkbait bites, which are often tricky hooksets.

Items in photos above not included with item for sale.

The price is for one (1) fishing lure brand new in box as shown below.
